This interview gave me the opportunity to interview a « serial learner », my mother, about her motivations for spending over a quarter century as a student. Given our familiarity with one another, the interview was carried out as a casual conversation rather than a formal interview. My mother is not a great public speaker, and I had to edit out a lot of hesitations and searching for words, but I think my editing maintained the overall tone of the conversation. I also asked a few questions I had not initially planned to ask and omitted one of my original questions (thé « too cool for school » question, which fell flat) in order to preserve the interest and overall tone of the interview.
I decided to use the school bell because it has a clear association with the topic at hand, but also because of its specific connotations: it marks the beginning of the interview just as it indicates the beginning of the school day.
